Shafiul Islam back in Bangladesh squad

Bangladesh have recalled Shafiul Islam to their 15-man squad for the Champions Trophy. There was no place for wicketkeeper Nurul Hasan, pace bowler Subashis Roy and allrounder Shuvagata Hom, who were all part of Bangladesh's most recent ODI series in Sri Lanka.

Nurul and Subashis, however, have been included in the preliminary squad that will undergo a training camp in Sussex from April 26 to May 6 and also play in a triangular ODI series in Ireland that begins in mid-May. Shuvagata is the only player to miss out on both squads. Chief selector Minhajul Abedin said his omission was due to English conditions requiring fewer spinners.

Shafiul, the 27-year old fast bowler, last played an ODI against England in October 2016, after which he suffered a hamstring injury during the Bangladesh Premier League. He has taken 63 wickets at 36.41 in his 56 ODIs. Minhajul said that Shafiul was always part of the selectors' plans but had to be sidelined due to the injury.

Nurul and Subashis didn't play any ODIs in Sri Lanka, with both having played during Bangladesh's previous series in New Zealand.

Apart from Subashis and Nurul, the middle-order batsman Nasir Hossain has also been included in the squad for the Ireland tri-series. Nasir had last played for Bangladesh against England in October last year, after which he missed out on tours to New Zealand, India and Sri Lanka. He had recently been part of the BCB's Emerging squad, and made a hundred in the Dhaka Premier League.

Shakib Al Hasan, who is currently playing the IPL in India, will join the squad on May 4. ESPNcricinfo understands, meanwhile, that Mustafizur Rahman will return to Bangladesh on April 25 and join his team-mates in Sussex thereafter.

I think kamrul islam replacement for shafiul islam

  • hussyy on April 23, 2017, 18:49 GMT

I dont get why Kamrul islam rabbi is being left out. He did alright against NZ but he has a lot of potentials! Bd should give him another chance and esp in english condition he will do well

I wish BD team all the best for the Tournament!

I think shafiul will only get hit , saifuddin would have been better. mahmudullah will be flop

I do not think they will experiment with any batsman in CT. Our top 7 batsman are already fixed. Even Mahmudulla will get the chance. Only bowlers line up are not finalized. Shafiul and Rubel will get chance in alternate games. Who ever clicks well will continue for the following games. Fizz and Taskin are the other 2 pacers. So it will be Mash, Fizz, Taskin plus Safiul or Rubel. I am sure Rubel will play the game against ENG hoping to duplicate his success as in WC15.

My champions trophy team would be: 1. Tamim Iqbal 2. Imrul Kayes 3. Shomyo Sarker 4. Shakib Al Hassan 5. Mushfiqur Rahim 6. Mosaddek Hossain 7. Mehedi Hasan Miraz 8. Mohammad Saifuddin 9. Mashrafee Mortaza 10. Shafiul Islam 11. Mustafizur Rahman (Name listed in batting order)

I know the batting lineup is a little weak but BD Batsmen are always weak in english condition, so, one more batsman won't help much but the team will have enough bowling firepower. With 4 genuine & 1 occasional pacers and 3 spinners, the bowling department will be a tough one to face. This selection contains high risks but have lots of potentials upsetting stronger team. Anyway, BD team mgmt will never take this much risk. They will eliminate 4th pacer and include either sabbir or mahmudullah. They might eliminate 4th pacer and mosaddek and include both Sabbir and Mahmudullah. And as we all know the result will be same old same old, an honorable defeat. But what they don't know is, there is no honor is defeat.

Some of the fellow BD fans are talking about including Anamul? Seriously, I hope it's a joke. Imrul is by far a lot better batsman in terms of his records and technique. Anamul is a hit and miss and very poor with his technique and temperament. There are a lot of better players than him in under 18 squad. And, also talking about including spinners in English condition, I hope, is a joke too. English condition is for the seamers and I'm slightly surprised to see Saifuddin is left out. He would have been good with bowl and bat in English condition. Nasir should have been in for Sunzamul for CT as you don't need too many spinners in english condition. Besides Mehedi and Sakib, Mahmudullah and Mosaddek could bowl occassional spin overs. I hope Nasir can get back into the CT team after Irish tour.

it is a good squad but i think batting may get exposed in one or two matches. I think they may upset one or two sides and can reach semis at the most

people are debating imrul vs anamul but I think Mehedi Maruf is promising partner for tamim , soumya can move down to number - 4. Anamul is talented , BcB should not waste this talent just becuz he was off form once. Bd top order - 1.tamim, 2.mehedi maruf, 3.anamul, 4. soumya .

@TAREK_RAHMAN If Anamul gets a chance in XI (highly unlikely), he will play to get runs to set his spot in team, no matter how many balls are used, rather than make the team win. Even if Anamul is in squad, it will be a waste of position considering there are three openers in squad already (Tamim,Sarkar,Imrul)

For Nasir, he should definitely be included as a backup allrounder in squad but will be hard for him to get in XI considering that he is competing against Mahmudullah and Mosaddek.
