Bangladesh won by 4 wickets
15,16,17,18,19 March 2017 (5-day match)
  • Overs 1-50
  • Overs 51-100
  • Overs 101-150

10.00am All in readiness. Mustafizur has the new ball. Tharanga and Karunaratne are walking out to the middle. Bright sunshine, blue skies currently. It was lashing down last night. No trace at all this morning. Three slips and a gully in place.

Pitch report now on arguably Sri Lanka's most result-oriented surface. "It's a lot drier than what we're used to seeing here," says Russell Arnold. "Generally, this is a win-toss, bowl-first pitch. But here, the side batting first can put up a good score and take control." So it's a deviation from normal. Let's see how it plays. 16 out of the 20 Tests played here have been decided. Highest percentage in Asia.

"This is similar to Galle, but will be good for batting in the first two-three days," says Rangana Herath. Mushfiqur Rahim says he too would have batted first. "The boys are geared up." The captain says he'll bat at No.5 or No. 6 here. Remember, he'll be keeping wickets too. "Proud and honoured to lead Bangladesh here," he says.

Sri Lanka: 1 Dimuth Karunaratne, 2 Upul Tharanga, 3 Kusal Mendis, 4 Dinesh Chandimal, 5 Asela Gunaratne, 6 Dhananjaya de Silva, 7 Niroshan Dickwella (wk), 8 Dilruwan Perera, 9 Rangana Herath (capt), 10 Suranga Lakmal, 11 Lakshan Sandakan

Bangladesh: 1 Tamim Iqbal, 2 Soumya Sarkar, 3 Imrul Kayes, 4 Shakib Al Hasan, 5 Mushfiqur Rahim (capt & wk), 6 Sabbir Rahman, 7 Mosaddek Hossain, 8 Mehedi Hasan, 9 Taijul Islam, 10 Subashis Roy, 11 Mustafizur Rahman

Marked for their potential at an early age, Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim and Tamim Iqbal have been key to Bangladesh successes in Test cricket over the last decade. Isam on the pillars of Bangladesh.

9.30am Sri Lanka have won the toss and will, predictably, bat first. One change for them. Dhananjaya de Silva comes in, Lahiru Kumara misses out on a surface that tends to offer help for the quicks. Four changes for Bangladesh. Mosaddek has been handed his first Test cap. Imrul, Taijul and Sabbir are in too. The ones to miss out: Mominul, Mahmudullah, Liton and Taskin

Md Sohag Bhuiya: "I have been living in Europe since 2009 and I have never missed a single game. I have moved to Spain couple of months ago and today at 10 o'clock I have a job interview.. A job is very important for me in Spain but how can I miss a game which is more important than my life? It's 5am, I haven't had a wink of sleep. Watching this Test." Talk about undying passion and love for the game. Good luck for your interview. Whether you get the job or not, you have a story for the kids.

Mahmood: "This 100th test brings back so many memories! I used to live in walking distance to the stadium, yet could not manage a ticket for the first day of the inaugural Test. I've lived through the ups and downs of my team, watched the game for hours even when the opposition batters were hammering our bowlers or running through our batting line-up. In way a, I grew up with the Bangladesh. And after 17 years, in a totally opposite time zone, waiting at midnight, to see the landmark Test. Good luck, Bangladesh!"

9.20am Some team news from the Bangladesh camp. Liton Das has injured his ribs and won't keep. That means Mushfiqur will once again don the gloves. Mahmudullah has been dropped, and we're told will be on the plane home at some stage today or tomorrow. Quite a big call that on a senior player. At this stage, he's likely to return for the limited-overs leg of the tour. Imrul, Sabbir are likely to get a game as well. Wonder if Bangladesh will persist with Subashish Roy, who finished with 1 for 137 in Galle. This is a seamer-friendly surface. Worth another go?

Faatiha: "I was about to attend my university admission exam with much tension in Chittagong on the day of the inaugural test at Nov 2000. Now I am waiting with much eagerness the start of the 100th Test from my living room in New York. Life is eventful."

8.30am Nostalgia is in the air. Sixteen years, four months and six days after they first entered the biggest stage at Dhaka's Bangabandhu National Stadium, cricket's youngest Test nation is ready for its 100th Test. None of the other nine Test nations have got to the landmark this fast. How did this dream become possible for the cricket-obsessed country? Mohammad Isam finds out

Up until the mid-1980s, Bangladesh was a football country. Cricket gave them a new identity. Suddenly people started to dream. Today, a player earns up to 35 lakh taka a season. Something they couldn't dream of even till 10 years ago. T20s are big, but Test status has meant those who work in paddy fields in Barisal, or in an air-conditioning factory in the UAE, have something to dream about.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board bigwigs have descended in Colombo. The players were hosted a special dinner last night and presented special jackets to mark the occasion. There will be a photo shoot as well, a moment the entire squad should be immensely proud of and one that they will probably frame on the walls of their living room back home.

Away from the felicitations, they'd also realise the need to put up a much better show than they did in Galle. Join me Shashank Kishore as I bring you every ball of the action as it unfolds at the P Sara Oval. I'll be joined by Mohammad Isam and our Sri Lanka correspondent Andrew Fernando from time-to-time as they keep us up to speed with everything you can't watch on television. This should be fun

If you're a passionate Bangladesh fan, or even just a cricket aficionado, this is as good a time as any to read this fascinating story on the rise of the Tigers. Sidharth Monga and Isam traveled the length and breadth of the country, spoke to a number of people - both current and ex-administrators, and of course players for this story.

0.1

Mustafizur Rahman to Karunaratne, no run, full and moving away from off stump, defended gently back down the pitch

The team batting first has won seven games here. Less than teams who've bowled first.

0.2

Mustafizur Rahman to Karunaratne, no run, touch short and moving away further from the fifth stump. There for the cut, but Dimuth decides to let it go

0.3

Mustafizur Rahman to Karunaratne, no run, gets on top of that length ball and taps it to the man coming in from point

0.4

Mustafizur Rahman to Karunaratne, no run, angles a length ball into middle from wide of the crease, not much movement off the deck on this one, worked to midwicket

0.5

Mustafizur Rahman to Karunaratne, no run, plays a full ball from the crease. Half-heartedly to gully. Should have gone forward to that one

0.6

Mustafizur Rahman to Karunaratne, no run, hint of swing again, Dimuth gets a good stride forward and defends with soft hands. Maiden to start with

End of over 1 (maiden) Sri Lanka 0/0

Subhasish Roy with the new ball from the other end. This is just his third Test. Three slips and a gully for him too. Tharanga on strike. Folks behind the wicket: Alert. Needless to say

1.1

Subashis Roy to Tharanga, no run, gets this to angle across the batsman from wide of the crease, left alone

1.2

Subashis Roy to Tharanga, no run, plays inside the line and watches the ball nip away and whizz past the shoulder of the bat. Superb seam position, good carry to Mushfiqur

1.3

Subashis Roy to Tharanga, no run, lovely, lovely delivery. Floated across at length, just around the off stump channel. Tharanga is unure whether to play or leave. Lets it go in the end

1.4

Subashis Roy to Tharanga, no run, this time there's much more confidence in the forward defense. Negates the away-going delivery easily.

1.5

Subashis Roy to Tharanga, no run, nips away off the seam from outside off, touch short as well, Tharanga watches it through to the keeper

1.6

Subashis Roy to Tharanga, no run, length ball on middle and leg, tucked to the leg side. Sri Lanka yet to get off the mark

2.1

Mustafizur Rahman to Karunaratne, no run, that is a jaffa! Dimuth had little clue about that. Feels for the delivery outside off, this one shapes away a wee bit to miss the outside edge by a whisker.

2.2

Mustafizur Rahman to Karunaratne, no run, shuffles across to whip that away off his hip, but the ball came back in a wee bit to hit him high on the thigh pad

2.3

Mustafizur Rahman to Karunaratne, no run, a touch ahead of length outside off, he defends off the back foot to cover

2.4

Mustafizur Rahman to Karunaratne, no run, hits him high on the pad as he prods half-forward and defends. Once again that in-between length that creates doubts in the batsman's mind

2.5

Mustafizur Rahman to Karunaratne, no run, scoring opportunity missed. Ripe for the picking, he could have just tickled this past the wicketkeeper to fine leg. Wrong line. Looks like he was worried about the delivery that nips away that he missed one that slides in nicely

big appeal for lbw, S Ravi says not out.

2.6

Mustafizur Rahman to Karunaratne, no run, this is full and angling in to middle, there's just a hint of deviation back in. Dimuth is overbalanced as he looks to work it to the leg side and is hit on the pad. It may have missed the stumps. Don't think height was an issue.

First time in Bangladesh's history that they've started a Test with three successive maidens

3.1

Subashis Roy to Tharanga, 1 run, hit on the glove, rolls to square leg as they get off the mark. He played outside the line of that delivery

3.2

Subashis Roy to Karunaratne, no run, stays inside the crease and defends the away-going length ball to the off side

3.3

Subashis Roy to Karunaratne, no run, floated full on middle, once again there's uncertainty in footwork as he looks to defend, rolls off a thick inside edge to midwicket

3.4

Subashis Roy to Karunaratne, no run, appeal for lbw. Shuffles across to work it to the leg side again but the ball pitched outside leg. He was on the move when the ball struck him on the pad

3.5

Subashis Roy to Karunaratne, no run, magnificent delivery. How did that miss the edge? I'm not sure. Looks like he was expecting a length ball, but this i full and nips away late to beat the forward defense.

Some chatter. Gully fielder Sabbir Rahman had a few words to say to Karunaratne.

3.6

Subashis Roy to Karunaratne, FOUR, second and third slip were way too close for each other. And so it is bound to create confusion. The batsman jabs at at away-going delivery, gets a thick edge that lands short of the cordon and races away to the boundary. They're creating opportunities here

Or was he chatting away? Looks Sabbir came in to adjust the stem guard. Pardon me. No words. All in good spirit so far.

Chatz: "Warner would have gone past 50 by the time Dimuth score his first run. Nervous? heavy brekkie?" Credit to the bowlers. They've been quite brilliant so far.

Issues with sightscreen. Oh, the perennial problem in Asia. Batsmen have enough time to grab a drink.

4.1

Mustafizur Rahman to Tharanga, no run, full and tails back in late, Tharanga plays with hard hands. This one rolls off the inner half of the bat to square leg

4.2

Mustafizur Rahman to Tharanga, no run, this one's a touch fuller in length and just around off, nips back in off the seam to hit him high on the bat as he defends

4.4

Mustafizur Rahman to Tharanga, no run, gets on top of the bounce and bunts the back of length delivery to gully

Third slip has moved out to short midwicket

4.5

Mustafizur Rahman to Tharanga, no run, beauty of a delivery. This one angles in and swerves away late to square up Tharanga. He must be thanking his stars. Feet glued to the crease as well as he pushed at that

4.6

Mustafizur Rahman to Tharanga, no run, driven straight down the ground but not off the middle, rolls to mid-on.

They're yet to score off Mustafizur. Engaging passage of play.

Test cricket turns 140 today! What makes it the best? Tell us and we'll feature a few on feedback

5.1

Subashis Roy to Karunaratne, no run, angles a length ball across the batsman, left alone

5.2

Subashis Roy to Karunaratne, no run, big shout again but the ball pitched way outside leg. He was high on the flap of the pad as well. Mushfiqur was moving down leg, and so is quite sure there was no way that pitched in line. Sensible decision to not review that. Good call from Aleem Dar

5.3

Subashis Roy to Karunaratne, no run, pitches this up on middle and leg, he gets forward and defends to the leg side. The bat face turned in his hand as he played at that

5.4

Subashis Roy to Karunaratne, no run, thick edge but straight to Sabbir at gully. Much fuller, drawn forward. He played with soft hands this time. Probing stuff

5.5

Subashis Roy to Karunaratne, 1 run, gets on top of the bounce and tucks the short of length delivery on leg stump to square leg

5.6

Subashis Roy to Tharanga, no run, much more authority in his forward defense this time, pinged the middle of the bat, but straight to cover.

6.2

Mustafizur Rahman to Karunaratne, no run, gets a good stride forward to negate the late movement, defended carefully to short cover

6.3

Mustafizur Rahman to Karunaratne, no run, picks the length early. This is a touch short, he gets back and bunts the short delivery to point

Lokia: "Negotiating new red cherry in P.Sara is always a big deal. It will go calm once it gets old."

6.4

Mustafizur Rahman to Karunaratne, no run, gets forward, shows the full face of the bat and defends the full ball back to the bowler

6.5

Mustafizur Rahman to Karunaratne, 5 wides, tests the bounce of the surface with a short ball that flies over the batsman's head. It was still going up, up and over even as Mushfiqur leapt high and put out one glove to stop it, but he had no chance. Wides called.

6.5

Mustafizur Rahman to Karunaratne, no run, hangs back and defends the full ball on off back to the bowler from the crease. Got it off the inside edge again

Sunny: "I would have dropped Karunratne for Dhananjaya and played Kumara. Someone who can consistently hit 140ks is a great thing to have. Maybe they're just worried about his fitness, but he's a lot bulkier than most of our pacers and it shouldn't be as much of an issue for him. He had a couple of 7-8 over spells in Zimbabwe."

6.6

Mustafizur Rahman to Karunaratne, no run, looks to cut but something hinders him from having a proper go at that, bunted gently to point in the end

First change this morning. Spin in the form of Mehedi Hasan. He'll bowl from around the stumps. Athar Ali Khan is baffled at the move. Slip and short leg in

7.1

Mehedi Hasan Miraz to Tharanga, no run, slow turn away from outside off, defended with an opened bat face to point

7.2

Mehedi Hasan Miraz to Tharanga, no run, drifting into middle, Tharanga prods forward and blocks that

7.3

Mehedi Hasan Miraz to Tharanga, no run, not much turn, this one slides back in. Firm drive to extra cover

7.4

Mehedi Hasan Miraz to Tharanga, no run, touch short, but not there for the cut. Tharanga rocks back and defends towards point

7.5

Mehedi Hasan Miraz to Tharanga, no run, pushed through quicker on the stumps from wide of the crease, Tharanga plays outside the line and gets an inside edge onto the pad

7.6

Mehedi Hasan Miraz to Tharanga, no run, either it's great judgment from Tharanga or a very, very nervous leave. This one drifts back in, pitches just a touch outside off and holds its line. Wasn't far away from off stump. Collective cry of anguish from the wicketkeeper and the close-in fielders. Excellent first over

End of over 8 (maiden) Sri Lanka 11/0

First runs off the bat off The Fizz

8.2

Mustafizur Rahman to Karunaratne, no run, gets a good stride forward, covers the line and defends to short cover

8.3

Mustafizur Rahman to Karunaratne, no run, gets to the pitch of the ball and squeezes the full-length delivery outside off to point

8.4

Mustafizur Rahman to Karunaratne, OUT, this was on the cards. Mehedi has taken a stunner at gully. Loose drive again from Dimuth; has paid the price for playing well away from the body with an angled bat. It flew off the thick outside edge. Got sucked into a shot he could have well not attempted. Mehedi held on as he landed on his back. Persistence has paid off this morning for Bangladesh.

Player of the Match from Galle walks in at No. 3

8.5

Mustafizur Rahman to Mendis, no run, delightful seam position, super line and that teasing length. Full, angled away and just a touch outside off, Kusal plays inside the line as he watches the ball zip past the outside edge

8.6

Mustafizur Rahman to Mendis, no run, in the off stump channel, going across the batsman again to bring the three slips into the picture, left alone

End of over 9 (2 runs) Sri Lanka 13/1

9.1

Mehedi Hasan Miraz to Tharanga, no run, too short and skidding back in, Tharanga is hit way outside leg. This one hurried on, cramped him for room and hit him on the back leg.

9.2

Mehedi Hasan Miraz to Tharanga, no run, gets forward and defends with an opened bat face to point. This was bowled much slower through the air, Tharanga had to reach out

9.3

Mehedi Hasan Miraz to Tharanga, no run, this one's a touch flatter and quicker, Tharanga defends from the crease, the inside-edge rolls to the off side. Tharanga is looking nervous here.

Silly point coming in as well to go along with slip and short leg. Two men right under his nose. Aggressive move this.

9.4

Mehedi Hasan Miraz to Tharanga, no run, too close to cut, goes through with the shot and chops it to point.

9.5

Mehedi Hasan Miraz to Tharanga, 1 run, too full this time, punched into the gap at cover. A single that will give Tharanga so much relief

9.6

Mehedi Hasan Miraz to Mendis, FOUR, first sign of aggression. Mendis has announced himself with a sweep over the infield. Fetched it from off but he was hitting with the turn. Hit very, very well too. One bounce into the deep midwicket boundary. That will surely give Mehedi something to think about

10.1

Mustafizur Rahman to Tharanga, no run, too full for the cut. There was a click as the ball passed the bat. No reaction from the bowler or keeper.

10.2

Mustafizur Rahman to Tharanga, FOUR, a cutter this time and Tharanga climbs into the short ball. Frees his arm and flays that into the gap between point and cover point. Poor ball that deserved to be punished, handled well by Tharanga

10.3

Mustafizur Rahman to Tharanga, no run, this time he cuts the short ball straight to backward point

10.4

Mustafizur Rahman to Tharanga, no run, nips back in from length on middle to cramp Tharanga, worked to square leg

Tharanga has been given out lbw by S Ravi, he's spontaneously reviewed it. Has he hit it?

10.5

Mustafizur Rahman to Tharanga, no run, nothing wrong with the front foot. This is a cutter that is floated at length on middle and leg, there's clearly daylight between bat and pad. He's hit on the pad even as Tharanga was overbalanced. At that instance, leg stump was visible but the ball was was angling down leg and would have missed the stumps. Decision overturned.

10.6

Mustafizur Rahman to Tharanga, no run, looks to drop it gently into the off side for a quick single, is nearly halfway down when Kusal sends him back. Gets back in time, the throw from cover was a weak one and didn't hit the stumps either.

11.2

Mehedi Hasan Miraz to Mendis, 1 run, leans forward and works it with the spin to wide mid-on for an easy single

11.3

Mehedi Hasan Miraz to Tharanga, no run, drifting in on middle, it's too full as well. Tharanga deadbats it back down the pitch

11.4

Mehedi Hasan Miraz to Tharanga, 1 run, plays outside the line, the inside-edge rolls wide of midwicket as they jog the single

11.5

Mehedi Hasan Miraz to Mendis, OUT, the drift has done the trick. The ball dipped on Kusal as he lunged a long way forward but this one held its line. Mushfiqur rode the bounce, collected it cleanly and whipped the bails off. He was a long way forward and foxed by a beauty. Mehedi is pumped. This is a fabulous start by Bangladesh.

12.2

Subashis Roy to Tharanga, 1 run, this one angles back in to take the thick inside edge and run down to fine leg. Very, very close. Could have been plumb had he missed that

14.4

Subashis Roy to Chandimal, no run, this one's a touch fuller outside off, watched through to the keeper

14.5

Subashis Roy to Chandimal, FOUR, this is a crunching cover drive. Too full, leans into the drive, the elbow nice and high as it comes down. The bat flows in a lovely arc as it flies off the blade and into the gap between cover and mid-off. So good to watch

14.6

was it sliding down? Chandimal has asked for a review immediately. Looking for a catch. It appears as if there was no inside-edge. They're now looking for the lbw.

38.1

Shakib Al Hasan to Chandimal, no run, the ball drifts back in from around the stumps, beats the inside edge and deflects off the pad to the slip fielder. They went up immediately. Looked like a call for lbw initially, but the angle would have definitely taken it down leg. The slip fielder then appealed again, for a deflection off the inside edge. That's what they went up for. Number of replays later, Marais Erasmus cannot ascertain there was any inside edge. The original decision has been overturned. Chandimal survives.

Lovely from a young batsman wanting to prove his side did the right thing by giving him an opportunity here

Once it was decided there was no bat, the third umpire had to see if the lbw was out. The onfield decision that changes to being not-out. So if the ball appeared to have been hitting the stumps or even clipping, would have stayed in the batsman's favour

Mehedi Hasan is back

AnikZ: "bit harsh there Mr Commentator." I'm not saying they've wasted time. Just pointing to the fact that they're behind.

41.3

41.4

Mustafizur Rahman to de Silva, no run, floats a cutter at length on off, bunted to the odd side

Nayeem: "@Debasish Mazumd, I am also not sure why Taijul is in the team, this is more seam friendly pitch than Galle, but instead of strengthening pace attack, BD are playing total 5 spinners, don't know how much Mushfiq's opinion here as now a days the Coach is the ultimate power to select BD team."

Mustafizur from around the wicket

44.1

Mustafizur Rahman to de Silva, no run, beaten for pace. It wasn't all the wide as well for him to use the pace and ease it behind point. Through to the keeper. Not far away from the edge

45.2

Taijul Islam to Chandimal, no run, slowed it down nicely, the ball drifted in and came in with the angle to roll off the inside edge to short leg

there's a catch that has been taken by Mehedi at fine leg. Umpires are checking if it was a clean catch. Soft signal: not out

45.3

Taijul Islam to Chandimal, 1 run, Chandimal was living dangerously, went to sweep that from outside the line but only managed to get a top edge. The man at fine leg ran in a long way, the ball was dying on him but he kept his eyes on the ball, tried to get his hands underneath the ball and pull off a stunner, or nearly one. Benefit of multiple replays may not be enough to overturn that decision. Too much doubt, the ball may have just dipped into the turf as well. Who would want to be the third umpire for a decision like this? Tough, tough decision to make but take nothing away from Mehedi's effort.

45.5

Mustafizur Rahman to Chandimal, no run, floats this full and outside off, deviates off the deck as well, left alone

Taijul Islam to de Silva, no run, appeal for lbw but he was a long way down the pitch. Didn't get to the pitch of the ball but stabbed it away with the pad.

47.2

Taijul Islam to de Silva, OUT, relief for Bangladesh! Looked to pull but this wasn't all that short for him to attempt that stroke. The ball kept a touch low and he ended up playing all over it. Beaten on the length, I'd say. The ball skidded through as well and in the end hit middle and leg. Wicket against the run of play, Bangladesh really needed that.

DM de Silva b Taijul Islam 34 (92m 54b 5x4 0x6) SR: 62.96

48.6

Subashis Roy to Chandimal, no run, full and wide outside off, Chandimal shoulders arms. It was there to drive, but he was happy to leave
